My favorite season is well on the way.

The Homecoming ( a short story, encore post)

Hot, stifling air. A far-reaching, almost eerie silence. The sky: brilliantly blue, generously dotted with billowy “mashed potato” clouds.Replicas and visions from younger, happier days.

All of these had remained, helping to sustain him through the long, lost days. He had known only to well, the many faces of hunger and thirst. The nights, hardest of all to bear.

He stood slightly stooped; his back to the sun. Sweat clinging the coarse denim shirt against his gaunt, slender frame. In spite of the relentless heat he felt a chill, deep inside. Cold to the bone. No clothing or blanket would warm that space; his needy soul and tattered heart.

The long, gold and maroon train, once again picking up speed. He watched its departure with mixed emotions. Waving a farewell to no one in particular. Passengers peering out of the now dusty windows; grateful to be moving again. Leaving behind the flat, unforgiving Prairies as the Transcontinental continued on its regular run, due West.

Faded brown-striped grip in one hand, the heirloom 12 string in the other. The latter, his only treasured possession. Handmade so many years ago. Lovingly polished and preserved. Miraculously unscathed in spite of life’s bumps along the way.

Too many miles; too many alone. Late nights and bar fights. Cheap booze, poker games and words gone awry. County jails and letters, never mailed.

Familiarity: once shunned, often despised, now craved. The old room. The same old stories. How they would make for a welcome, much-overdue change.

He trudged the last five, long miles along the well-worn path. Almost as worn as his one pair of shoes.

There would be shade trees so high and cool clear water, back on the farm. The now “old” dog announcing his arrival, long before he would tap on the frame of the carved screen door.  A warm welcome; wan smile? Her older but still beautiful face to greet him and hold him close? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Only to rest awhile. Not to look over his shoulder or “watch his back”. To slowly unclench his rough calloused hands. To sleep as if a young boy again, under the sun-dried handmade quilt, laid upon his single bed.

The green grass and greener pastures still to be found. But not now. Not for a while.

Coming home….

His bronze face relaxed. Looking up, he breathed deeply. The rays of sun reflecting a smile.

PS: I wrote and first posted this story back in 2008.It came to mind the other night, when I was watching a movie about another homecoming. As I have many new readers here at My Poetic Path, I thought it was worthy of an encore. 😉 I hope you enjoy it.

Are You Yearning for Snow???

yearning haiku

I am! 😉

We’ve had quite a bit of rain recently, here in BC but just a bit of snow that melts before it hits the ground at lower elevations (where we are).

This haiku and photo came to mind today, as I scanned the cloudy skies.

Any snow where you are?

Have a wonderful, magical weekend! 🙂

Wonderful, Magical…. Autumn!

Poem for Autumn

Season of splendor.

As Mother Earth gently rests her weary head.

Preparing for the long sleep ahead.

The Stillness:

Harbinger to the winter chill.

But for now…

Nature’s paintbrush is busy.

With brilliant palette of crimson and gold.

The forest ablaze with color.

As the late summer sun still warms the days.

My favorite season.

It’s beauty far surpassing the others.

A magical time of awakenings and endings.

Like no other.

A joy to once again rediscover.

We  are reminded of another year’s passing.

Of changes, inevitable.

Required in all things.

And to everything there is a season,

and a reason we will find,

for all.

Autumn.

It’s loveliness and wonder endures.

It’s arrival.

Always a feast for the senses.

A gilded gift we receive.

To dazzle and delight.

We put away our thoughts.

Of the cold days ahead.

There is so much to enjoy right now.

Inspiring us.

Autumn’s beauty to behold.

We are having an absolutely glorious autumn, here in BC. Warm, sunny days with just the hint of a breeze and nice cool evenings.

It’s been so invigorating, especially after the intense temps. this summer.

How I fall!

Seems like it’s the fav season for more and more people now. It’s always been mine.

I hope you enjoy the photo and poem above, celebrating the wonder of this magical time of year.

How is the weather where you are?

Scenes of Early Autumn

What a lovely time of year this is. Not quite autumn but still, there is a change in the air.

I happened to find this post today from 2010 with some of my fav early autumn pics that I took that year.

I hope you enjoy this encore post or for the first time perhaps?

Have a wonderful weekend. It’s going to be a hot one, here in BC. 😉

My Poetic Path

I took these photos early this week.

Stroll/scroll along…..hope you enjoy the views as much as I did!

Mountain Ash at it’s peak.

The holly was just starting to turn.

Berries everywhere and in so many colors.

 Breathtaking pinks and soft green.

Brown-eyed Susan was still looking fine! 😉

Someone’s lucky: a  glorious front yard tree.

Regal purple. A beautiful sight to behold.

Happy Autumn! Isn’t it grand? 🙂

Rest Awhile

I included this poem at the beginning of my new book:

Laughing AT the Grim Reaper!

Thought it was a good time to share it here again at My Poetic Path too.

I hope you enjoy it! 🙂

PS: Does anyone know why WP removes line spacing when you reblog a post? This has happened to me more than once.

There are spaces in this poem for each stanza but when I reblogged it, they disappeared.

I couldn’t figure out how to add them back in, so they would stay in place.

Another WP quirk I guess. 😦

My Poetic Path

Rest awhile.
Far from the struggles and strains of life.
Find that place and seal it in your heart.
To pause, retreat to.
Where grace always dwells.
Rest awhile.
Put back the smile.
Somewhere lost.
Now: softly, silently returned.
Rest awhile.
Peace:
A beacon in the dark.
Sheltered, nurturing.
Safe and sublime.
Rest awhile.
Treasured moments.
Tranquil dawns.
May your tomorrows.
Outlive life’s storms.

We are the choices…

** AN ENCORE POST FROM MY SEPTEMBER 2010 ARCHIVES.**

THE WORDS STILL RINGS TRUE FOR ME.

I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS POST FOR THE FIRST OR SECOND TIME.

HAPPY WEEKEND! :<)

My Poetic Path

….that we make.

A very wise person must have written that line.

Our choices define us.

Give a framework to the future.

And sometimes, close the door on people and things,

best forgotten and left behind.

Life is full of choices.

       A series and connection.

We cast our net.

We take our chances.

Life’s potential grinds to a halt without our:

good/so-so/better late than never/sometimes downright bad

 choices.

Pick one and go for it!!!

♥            ♥

 Happy Fall everyone!

My photo “choice” for this post is to celebrate the return of my favorite season. 🙂
