Book Review: Taming The Hour of the Wolf by H. R. Warren

TAMING THE HOUR OF THE WOLF

As I wrote about in my book:

Laughing_AT_the_Grim_Cover_for_Kindle

Laughing AT the Grim Reaper! Gems of Wisdom for Aging Well,

I’ve had (MORE THAN) my share of sleepless nights, over the years. 😦

Particularly annoying for me has been waking up in the middle of the night (around 3 AM…) which is also a time referred to as:

The Hour of the Wolf.

Tossing, turning, wide awake but tired…thinking all kinds of crazy, annoying and at times, very disturbing thoughts. Where some of them came from, I have no idea. But enough to keep me awake and to interrupt sleep in a most unpleasant way.

The sleepless night situation HAS improved in the past couple of years as I have been making a real effort to go to sleep in a calm, relaxed frame of mind and when I DO wake up, in the middle of the night now, there are a lot fewer negative thoughts that come to mind. But now, when it does happens, I replace these negative thoughts with positive ones, right away! Good things I choose and WANT to dwell on,…it’s worth the effort and it really has helped.

So back to this book review.

I “happened” to be browsing over at Amazon one day recently and did a search for “Hour of the Wolf” as I had seen the  Ingmar Bergman movie of the same name, many years ago in Toronto and wondered if it was still available.

If you aren’t familiar with the movie: Hour of the Wolf, you can read more about it here.

A strange, surreal and original story that I never completely forgot.

And the term “hour of the wolf” is one that has always stayed with me, particularly on sleepless nights when I wake up during the period between 3-5AM,  AKA “the hour of the wolf”.

When I did the search at Amazon, this Kindle book: Taming the Hour of the Wolf, also came up and I am SO glad I checked it out too. It’s a wonderful book! 🙂

Written in a personable, engaging style and filled with 144 affirmations that readers can refer to, again and again, when the Hour of the Wolf strikes a discordant note.

I am a true believer in the power of positive thoughts and particularly affirmations.

The ones that author: H. R. Warren, shares in this book are divided into categories including:

Sleeplessness, Negativity & Doubt, Procrastination, Abundance… and several others.

By choosing a particular category, you are then given a list of useful and calming affirmations to help still the mind and replace negative, upsetting thoughts, particularly during the Hour of the Wolf.

I think most people at some time or other grapple with sleepless nights. It’s not fun, it’s frustrating and getting back to sleep can be so difficult at times.

By keeping this book: Taming the Hour of the Wolf, close at hand on a bedside table perhaps, there is help only a click or page turn away.

The Kindle version (which is the one I have) is nicely formatted, with full page nature photos to begin each new category.

And at less than a $1. for the Kindle version right now, a real bargain for a reference guide that I know I will be referring to, again and again. Especially when the “hour of the wolf” takes a turn for the worse and I need some positive thoughts to help to calm my mind and get back to sleep.

If you also struggle with ongoing or even occasional sleepless nights, check this one out.

Have a great day and sweet dreams! 🙂

Book Review: Getting to Mr. Right by Carol Balawyder

getting to mr right cover

I am so excited for my blog pal: Carol Balawyder who has now published her third book:

Getting to Mr. Right.

Congrats Carol and well done! 🙂

And as I said in my 5 star review over at Amazon, Getting to Mr. Right is definitely RIGHT ON!

Here’s my review from Amazon:

Getting to Mr. Right is Definitely RIGHT ON!!!

I had previously read: Missi’s Dating Adventures by Carol Balawyder and thoroughly enjoyed it. She did not disappoint with her newest book: Getting to Mr. Right.

This is another great story from start to finish, albeit with a more serious tone overall this time. Her writing style has also evolved and matured providing a story that flows quite seamlessly throughout.

The characters in this book are well developed, the plot has just enough twists and turns to keep things interesting and the ending is satisfying and spot on.

If you have ever struggled to find Mr.Right, have dipped into the sometimes perilous waters of online and particularly over 40 dating, this is a must read.

Highly recommended!

If you are looking for a fun, entertaining and at times, enlightening book to curl up with this weekend, you might want to check this one out. I’m sure glad I did. 😉

An Excerpt from: Laughing AT the Grim Reaper!

laughing at the grim reaper cover

The following are three passages from my newest book/Ebook:

Laughing AT the Grim Reaper! Gems of Wisdom for Aging Well (click to visit Amazon product page)

Of all the books that I’ve written to date, this one truly is: “closest to my ♥ ” and in so many ways.

It’s been so gratifying to already have many people tell me how much they are enjoying this book and how it is touching them and also “ringing true” for them.  If we can do that with any written work, I call it a success. 😉

Thanks to everyone who has already written reviews over at Amazon.com and those of you who are planning to write one soon. All appreciated! 🙂

Here goes:

  Give up the BAD vices!

You know the ones. I’m not talking about a couple of squares of good chocolate or a glass of organic red wine.

But DO ditch: Smoking. Excessive: drinking, gambling, or spending. Eating junk food on a regular basis, watching mindless hours of TV….

Some people think that they can “get away” with continuing to smoke (for example) because they know of a much-older person who has smoked every day, without apparent harm. But what might not have been taken into account is that person’s: strong genetics, how they were raised on better quality: food, air, water and with a lot of hard work/exercise all part of the mix. All those things DO have an impact on what a person can “get away with” and come through, relatively unscathed.

Why take that risk?

Not to mention, why keep wasting money on things like cigarettes when there are so many other things of value you could be spending that money on?

Don’t wait for the New Year to ditch your own bad habits/vices either, do it now! You’ll feel so good about yourself and you just might add a whole lot of good years of life to your future too.

Start a Rant Journal.

Record all the thoughts you don’t want to share with anyone else but are on your mind. Write it all down, the frustration, the anger…rant, curse, cry, get it all down on paper. Don’t leave anything out that’s bothering you, today. And when you’re finished for the day, close your Rant Journal and put those thoughts and emotions behind you. Get it “off your chest” and then really LET IT GO!

Have a Fire-Cleansing ceremony.

Write down all the hurts, slights, pain, heartaches…with the people in your life (past and present) that you haven’t been able to let go of. Write each of them on a small piece of paper.

Then, one by one, drop them slowly and mindfully into a fireplace, bonfire, or other type of fireproof (safe) container and watch each paper crumple and burn away. As each one burns, consciously release the hurt and pain you’ve held on to, up to this point. Dispel the negativity into the universe, let it go and feel your spirit lighten.

This is a simple but powerful ritual that has really helped me, several times. Repeat whenever you need to purge a lot of negativity from your life, in a tangible and powerful way.

Rest Awhile

I included this poem at the beginning of my new book:

Laughing AT the Grim Reaper!

Thought it was a good time to share it here again at My Poetic Path too.

I hope you enjoy it! 🙂

PS: Does anyone know why WP removes line spacing when you reblog a post? This has happened to me more than once.

There are spaces in this poem for each stanza but when I reblogged it, they disappeared.

I couldn’t figure out how to add them back in, so they would stay in place.

Another WP quirk I guess. 😦

My Poetic Path

Rest awhile.
Far from the struggles and strains of life.
Find that place and seal it in your heart.
To pause, retreat to.
Where grace always dwells.
Rest awhile.
Put back the smile.
Somewhere lost.
Now: softly, silently returned.
Rest awhile.
Peace:
A beacon in the dark.
Sheltered, nurturing.
Safe and sublime.
Rest awhile.
Treasured moments.
Tranquil dawns.
May your tomorrows.
Outlive life’s storms.

I’m really pleased how this book turned out. 🙂

It’s been a book that I’ve been thinking about and working on for several months.

All about aging well, embracing and celebrating whatever stage of life we are currently at.

And most of all, putting the Grim Reaper in his place.

Letting him know, who IS calling the shots in our lives, right now. 😉

And laughing AT the Grim Reaper is always a good thing, don’t you agree?

Have a great weekend.
